EU: Tighter controls of animal transports
04.10.2017 EU: Tighter controls of animal transportsLand Lantbruk, 04 Oct 2017, online:-
In May 2017, 32 MEPs sent a letter to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker demanding a stop to animal transports to countries outside the EU. This was prompted by reports that animals are exposed to severe suffering during the transports and in many cases even in the countries to which they are transported. The European Commission has now replied to the letter. The Commission will not legislate to stop the transports but it will increase the controls of animal transports in member countries this year and next year.
Swedish MEP Fredrick Federley (ALDE), who was among those who signed the letter, welcomes the Commission's pledge to take measures against those EU countries that do not follow the existing laws.
