France: Cdiscount creates more logistics space, launches new delivery services
Supply Chain Magazine, 08 Dec 2017, online:-
In order to improve its customer service, with custom deliveries that arrive sooner, French online retailer Cdiscount (Casino) will have inaugurated 200,000 m2 of additional warehouse space by the end of 2017 and the extension of one of its two sites in Saint-Mard from 48,000 m2 to 72,000 m2 will take place in early 2018. The retailer currently has 500 000 m2 of warehouse space, half of which is located in Île-de-France, and this has enabled it to offer same-day delivery since 2015. Sunday deliveries, a service launched with Chronopost in Paris during 2016, will be available throughout Île-de-France and in the 14 largest agglomerations in France from the weekend of 9 December 2017 and in order to support these services, a software suite has been implemented with Manhattan Associates. This includes an order management solution and a new warehouse management system. Two new 3D packaging machines (the CVP 500 from Neopost) have also been installed. Two of these machines are currently in use at the firm's warehouse in Bordeaux and another is being used at its site in Réau. Cdiscount has recently signed a partnership with Israeli company Bringg for the location of products weighing over 30 kg and offer one-hour deliveries for these items. The service was trialled in Bordeaux during June-July 2017, but is now available in Île-de-France and Lyon. During the first quarter of 2018, the service will be launched throughout the whole of France. Additionally, Cdiscount has been incubating four start-ups with innovation incubator The Warehouse and is currently working on the robotisation of its logistics activities. It will work alongside cobotics specialist NoMagic, one of the four incubated start-ups, to set up several drivers on the issue of warehouse robotisation and is working on a thesis with Mines Paris Tech robotics centre CAOR. Furthermore, it is researching the various logistical processes that could be robotised in order to provide greater quality and speed, as well as find workplace health solutions.
