SNCF Logistics exceeded EUR 10bn (USD 10.56bn) in turnover in 2016 and amounts to close to a third of the activity of French rail operator SNCF. Its operating margin rose from 3.2% in 2015 to 4.8% in 2016. Growth was fuelled by Geodis, the logistics, freight forwarding, road transport and express delivery entity, which represents four fifths of SNCF Logistics turnover. It generates 55% of its activity outside of France and intends to enhance its internationalisation. Manufacturing and distribution bids are increasingly European and global, and Geodis needs to strengthen itself in the US, China and Germany so as to become one of the five biggest operators in its field worldwide. This implies reaching a EUR 15bn turnover, double what it is today. This will not be possible without acquisitions, which go against the debt stabilising objective of SNCF.
