French courier firm Relais Colis began efforts to redesign its business model a year ago through, among other things, the creation of new hubs and a conversion to express services and small e-commerce sites. Its EUR 40mn (USD 48.14mn) transformation plan was deployed with help from German courier company DHL, which now has a 25% stake in the business. Relais Colis has relocated its sites in Bordeaux and Marseille in order to create platforms that are two to three times larger and opened a sorting platform in Combs-La-Ville during April 2017 that will be able to process up to 250,000 parcels per day compared to 50,000 at its site in Servon, which has been closed. It has introduced new chains of mechanisation at an existing site that allow the firm to reposition itself on express deliveries and the firm has begun works on a sister site to the Combs-La-Ville facility in Jonas, which will focus on e-traders located to the South of the Loire. It expects this site to be inaugurated before July 2018. Relais Colis intends to mechanise its sorting centres throughout France, although it will keep a non-mechanised division for its secondary business, namely the transport of furniture and household appliances, which is progressing well. The firm will be deploying new computer terminals among its subcontractors and drivers involved in this activity in order to improve tracking and increase interactivity with consumers. Additionally, it is aiming to increase its number of pick-up points from 5,300 at the end of 2017 to 8,000 by 2020, when it is also planning to open a third hub in Lille. The company's other plans include interconnecting to DHL's international network.
