Germany: Gigaliner trucks provide few environmental benefits, says Daimler study
Stuttgarter Zeitung, 22 Aug 2017, online:-
According to the preliminary results of a study undertaken in partnership between the German vehicle manufacturer Daimler and the regional government in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, extra-long gigaliner trucks provide little environmental benefits over traditional trucks when used on German roads. A field test for gigaliner trucks has been running in the state since spring 2015. Preliminary results have shown that the use of the trucks would save 165,000 tonnes of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere by 2030. When compared to the total forecast volume of emissions from road transport of 144mn tonnes of CO2 by 2030, the reduction in emissions levels from gigaliner truck use is minimal. The report is likely to spark increased debate on the issue of gigaliner trucks on German roads. A number of German political parties, including the left-of-centre SPD, Green and Left parties have sought to ban the use of the trucks on German roads.
