Germany: Goods transported along Kiel Canal down 7.6% in 2016
Die Deutsche Verkehrszeitung, 17 Jan 2017, p9:-
According to figures from Germany's general directorate of waterways and shipping, the amount of goods transported along the Kiel Canal, which links the North Sea and the Baltic Sea through parts of northern Germany, decreased by 7.6% to approximately 84mn tonnes in 2016 compared to 2015. The number of ships that transported goods through the canal also dropped to under 29,300 from a good 32,000 previously. A number of factors such as a global decline in handled goods, lower bunker oil prices, the Russian embargo and less freight form China were cited as reasons for the lower results. Nevertheless, there are some positive signs for 2017, as there was a slight increase of 0.3% in goods handled partially through the canal in 2016, such as to the port of Rendsburg.
