Germany: Rail toll to be halved to promote rail freight transport
07.07.2017 Germany: Rail toll to be halved to promote rail freight transportSüddeutsche Zeitung, 07 Jul 2017, online:-
Germany's transport minister Alexander Dobrindt has announced that the so called rail toll is to be halved in Germany. The government expects the income from the toll to amount to EUR 350mn (USD 399.87mn) per year from 2018 onwards. Through the toll reduction the government hopes to encourage the transport of freight by rail instead of by road. However, the aims have been criticised by the general works council of the German rail freight company DB Cargo as it doubts whether it will be able to transport any more freight in the near future. This is due to a lack of locomotives and freight cars.
