Norway: Seatrans to convert four vessels into hybrid ships
Finansavisen, 06 Sep 2017, p.21:-
Norwegian shipping company Seatrans wants to reduce CO2 emissions by 15-20% by converting four of its 18 vessels into plug-in hybrid ships. The shipping company believes the solution is in a plug-in hybrid system with batteries on board. The plug-in hybrid solution is being developed in collaboration with Norwegian Electric Systems in Bergen. Alternating current of 220, 440 or 690 volts and 50 Hz is applied via a standard plug to a board on board the ship. There the current is converted into direct current and goes into batteries. Thereby the ship receives power from the batteries and not via the mains. Investments in new boards, converters and batteries are estimated at between NOK 4mn (EUR 432,509 USD 513,034) and NOK 5mn per ship. At longer term Seatrans plans for its entire fleet to be electric.
