Sweden: Lighthouse disappointed over grants to maritime R&D
Svensk Sjöfartstidning, 10 Jan 2017, online:-
Åsa Burman, project director at Swedish maritime competence centre Lighthouse, states that she is disappointed that the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) did not allocate larger grants to maritime research for 2017. She says that the allocated SEK 55mn (EUR 5.76mn USD 6.09mn) is far from the sum demanded, and that governmental investigations have shown that at least SEK 200mn would be necessary for maritime R&D. According to Burman, there exists a clear vision from both the Swedish government and the European Union to move road freight transports to both railway and shipping, where the latter could also contribute to positive climate development as well as generate export revenues. If this is to become reality, Burman continues, increased R&D efforts will be necessary.
