The 2018 budget proposal presented by the Swedish government includes total climate and environment subsidies of SEK 5bn (EUR 525.65mn USD 627.92mn). SEK 600mn will be allocated for cleaner sea waters. Subsidies to the maritime transport sector will be reduced from SEK 1.63bn in 2017 to about SEK 1.52bn in 2018. The decrease is attributed to fewer registered vessels eligible for subsidies. The sum will be increased to SEK 1.56bn in 2019 and SEK 1.61bn in 2020. The investment plan in the Swedish Maritime Administration (Sjöfartsverket) amounts to a total of about SEK 2.60bn for the period 2018 to 2020. This includes investments in the Södertälje and Trollhätte canals. The government has also commissioned the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) to investigate if the number of transport routes classified as inland waterways can be increased. The Swedish Maritime Administration, the Transport Agency, the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) and the Swedish Civil Aviation Administration (Luftfartsverket) will be granted SEK 40mn each in the coming three years.
