Sweden: Shippers' Council criticises budget guidelines

The Swedish Shippers´ Council (Näringslivets Transportråd) has criticised the recently presented budget guidelines from the government for lacking necessary investments in infrastructure and transports. The council states that more investments in the near future are necessary for securing competitiveness in the Swedish transport sector in the long term. The council has further stated that there must be a more predictable long-term plan for the financing of infrastructure maintenance in order for previously announced maintenance investments to reach maximum effect. The guidelines are criticised in general terms for being too sprawling and for preventing positive development concerning job-creating growth, welfare, sustainability and competitiveness. This includes a stated ambition to relocate road freight transports to railway and marine transports, while there is at the same time plans for further increasing rail and watercourse fees. The goals for reducing carbon dioxide emissions is also deemed unlikely to be reached for this reason.
