US: New bill aims to establish dedicated funding for freight infrastructure
Progressive Railroading, 27 Jun 2017, online:-
A new bipartisan legislation titled H.R. 3001, National Multimodal and Sustainable Freight Infrastructure Act introduced by US Representative Alan Lowenthal aims to establish a dedicated source of funding for freight-related infrastructure projects. The bill features ideas earlier proposed by Lowenthal addressing freight infrastructure financing which aims to establish both competitive and formula programmes for investments in freight infrastructure. The bill proposes the addition of a 1% fee over the cost of good transportation which is expected to raise around USD 8bn (EUR 7.15bn) which will be used solely for freight infrastructure. The Coalition for America's Gateways & Trade Corridors (CAGTC) has reportedly shown its support for the bill. The proposal builds on the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act which is said to highlight a national freight policy for the first time.
